| A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT: Greetings to everyone and a very Happy New Year to all. The Fall has already proven to be a success for all of our programs. We started out the year with our 11 and under Jr. Recital with 20 students representing 7 teachers. What a delight to have a young flute student on the program aloog with the young pianists. The judged recital once again showed the dedication of the students, their teachers and the judges involved. The Guy concert showcased an enormously talented singer and The American Women Composers concert once again brought out this remarkable group. We are fortunate to have such a treasure in the DCFMC. We have many programs scheduled in the coming months and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has worked so hard to make them a reality. Our purpose is to nurture young talent and those who participate are always pleased to be a part of our programs. I would like to invite our members to come to any of our events and hear what I hear: talent, enthusiasm and a genuine love for music. - Hedy Bannon |

| A TRIBUTE TO KATHLEEN SROUR, OUR BELOVED HISTORIAN... who passed away on September 28, 2004 after a long illness. Kathleen was editor of this newsletter until 1998, and a long-time member on the DCFMC Board of Directors, an indefatigable member of the Sligo Federated Music Club and frequent hostess for the club's sterling concerts at her lovely home in Potomac, MD. Kathleen wrote her own poignantly beautiful 'epitaph' for her Capital Memorial Church memorial service held on 10/06/2004. She will be sorely missed. |
| KUDOS TO OUR D.C. WOMEN COMPOSERS! The goal of the American Women Composers Program is to stimulate public awareness, appreciation and knowledge of the compositions written by women. Planning for a concert in this program showcases the talent available in areas throughout the USA. We are proud of our gifted women composers who won 2nd place this past November when our D.C. Federation presented them in a concert dedicated to The Parade of American Music at Strathmore Hall Arts Center: Winifred Hyson, Jo Lombard, Carrie Rose, Ruth Norman and Wang An-Ming with their compositions for piano, flute and voice. Ranking #2 in the USA, the District of Columbia Federation of Music Clubs has won AWCP-- awards since 2001. Jo Lombard performed her piano number, "The River of the Blue Pearl"; Andrea Schewe, Mezzo Soprano, with accompanist Carolyn Deibel, sang "Wells of Salt, Knives of Song" (Poems by Denise Levertov) by Winifred Hyson; Kathleen Trahan and Antares Boyle, flautists, played Carrie Rose's "$0 Pure When They Clash"; Usa McNeil, soprano, with accompanist Wm.
