LOCAL COMPOSER LASALLE SPIER

LaSalle Spier was a pianist, teacher and composer of exceptional stature who trained in New York with Rafael Joseffy and in Berlin with Richard Burmeister. Born in Washington, he lived and worked here until his death at 92 in 1982. His life mirrored the growth and development of music by American composers. He organized the Washington Chamber Music Symphony in 1920 and was one of the founders of the Friends of Music at the Library of Congress, which, in turn, founded the National Symphony Orchestra. He was a charter member of the Washington Composers Club. In his composing and teaching, he brought to bear the finest in musical culture with a creativity and perception that has touched the lives of all his students.
