The Nancy Peery Marriott Romantic/Impressionistic Competition
This $300 award for an outstanding performance of a piece from the Romantic or Impressionistic periods has been made possible by our long-time member, Nancy Peery Marriott. The competition is open to all instruments. Teachers presenting students in this competition must be members of the DCFMC.
The Gretchen Hood Memorial Award
The biennial Gretchen Hood Memorial Award Competition encourages young artists preparing for careers in music. It was endowed by the late Washington soprano Gretchen Hood. A first prize of $750 and a second prize of $500 may be awarded.
La Salle Spier Piano Competition
In memory of a prominent Washington pianist, teacher, and composer, the LaSalle Spier competition is for pianists between the ages of 18 and 25. An award of $1,500 and a performance opportunity is given to the winner. Contestants are required to perform two works by American composers, one by Mr. Spier and one chosen by the contestant. The competition is not being held this year; please contact the president for more information.
Senior American Women Composer Program Awards
The NFMC sponsors an annual contest for Senior American Women Composers. The purpose of the Women Composers Program Award is to stimulate appreciation and knowledge of music by American Women Composers and to encourage its performance by solo artists, performing groupsstudents. Each of the 14 NFMC districts awards a prize of $70 for the winning performance of a program by women composers.
Student Composers Contests
The NFMC sponsors contests for Young Composers ages 16-25 and Junior Composers ages 6-18. Compositions from these two groups are judged at the local, district, and national levels. The DCFMC awards a $25 prize to all local winners in the young composers and the junior composers categories.
